How it got here
The resolution supporting the California Recycling and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act originated from a need to address the failures of recent environmental legislation in California.
The Plastics Free California initiative was filed to address plastic pollution and was approved by the Attorney General’s office on January 8, 2020.
Supporters submitted over 870,000 voter signatures to qualify the initiative for the November 2022 California ballot.
The Secretary of State notified county elections officials that the measure had qualified for the ballot with more than the required valid signatures.
The Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution No. 406-21, formally endorsing the Plastics Free California ballot measure.
The resolution was enacted without the Mayor's signature, becoming effective as per the city charter.
