How it got here
This legislation originated from the need to restore funding for critical programs serving vulnerable populations in San Francisco following significant budget cuts proposed by the Mayor.
The Mayor proposed $75 million in mid-year budget cuts for the 2023-2024 adopted budget, which included $48 million in cuts to services for youth and families.
Under the direction of the Budget and Appropriation Committee, the Budget and Legislative Analyst identified General Fund and Non-General Fund cost savings of $94,980,405 for Fiscal Years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026.
Supervisors Chan, Peskin, Mandelman, Melgar, Dorsey, and Engardio introduced a motion stating the Board's intention to appropriate $48,140,000 of cost savings to restore critical programs.
The motion was amended to increase the appropriation to $58,855,862 and was approved by the Board of Supervisors.
