How it got here
The legislation originated from the need for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to comply with the Surveillance Technology Policy established under Administrative Code Chapter 19B.
The SFMTA began operating Automated Red Light and No Turn Enforcement Cameras as part of its Automated Enforcement Program to reduce traffic collisions and fatalities.
COIT, through its Privacy and Surveillance Advisory Board (PSAB), held a public hearing to consider the Surveillance Technology Policy and Surveillance Impact Report for the Automated Red Light and No Turn Enforcement Cameras.
COIT's PSAB voted to recommend that the Board of Supervisors adopt the Surveillance Technology Policy for the Automated Red Light and No Turn Enforcement Cameras.
The Mayor's Office submitted the ordinance to the Board of Supervisors for approval of the Surveillance Technology Policy for the SFMTA's use of Automated Red Light and No Turn Enforcement Cameras.
The proposed ordinance was referred to the relevant department for further review and input.
The Rules Committee recommended the ordinance for passage to the full Board of Supervisors.
The Board of Supervisors finally passed the ordinance approving the Surveillance Technology Policy for the SFMTA's continued use of existing Automated Red Light and No Turn Enforcement Cameras.
