How it got here
The legislation originated from concerns about pedestrian safety and the need for enforcement of existing laws regarding scooter use on sidewalks.
California Vehicle Code, Section 21235(g) prohibits the operation of electric or gas-powered scooters on sidewalks, except when necessary to enter or leave adjacent property.
Supervisor Shamann Walton, along with other supervisors, introduced a resolution urging the SFMTA and SFPD to enforce the prohibition of riding scooters on sidewalks to protect pedestrians.
The Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution No. 540-25, urging increased enforcement of scooter regulations and public education campaigns.
The Mayor returned the resolution unsigned, but it became effective without his approval due to the time limit set by the Charter.
The Clerk of the Board transmitted the adopted resolution to relevant city departments, including SFMTA and SFPD, for implementation.
