This legislation originated from San Francisco's long-standing commitment to protect immigrant communities through its Sanctuary City Ordinance.
The City enacted the Sanctuary City Ordinance (Administrative Code, Chapter 12H) to prohibit the use of City resources for federal immigration enforcement.
The Board reaffirmed and strengthened Sanctuary protections by adopting the Due Process for All Ordinance (Administrative Code, Chapter 12I), limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
The resolution recognizing the Sanctuary City Ordinance's prohibitions against assisting federal immigration enforcement was introduced by Supervisors Mahmood, Chen, Walton, Sauter, Chan, Fielder, and Melgar.
The Board of Supervisors adopted the resolution, reaffirming the City's commitment to support immigrant communities and local autonomy.
The Mayor returned the resolution unsigned, which allowed it to become effective without his approval.
