How it got here
The legislation originated from a state grant awarded to improve accessibility and safety at Sunset Dunes Park following its opening as a public space.
Voters approved the permanent closure of the Upper Great Highway to vehicular traffic, transforming it into a public open space, which included the establishment of Sunset Dunes Park.
Sunset Dunes Park opened with interim amenities, operated and maintained by RPD.
RPD began public outreach to gather community priorities for the new park, identifying needs for improved signage and accessibility.
The Commission adopted Resolution No. 2603-004, approving RPD's application for a $200,000 grant from the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
RPD submitted a memo explaining the need for retroactive approval for the grant, as the performance period began on July 1, 2025.
The Clerk of the Board received the resolution from the Recreation and Park Department to accept and expend the grant.
