Ordinance amending the Planning Code to designate the Charles L. Hinkel Home, located at 740 Castro Street, Assessor’s Parcel Block No. 2752, Lot No. 014, on the west side of Castro Street between 21st Street and 20th Street, as a landmark consistent with the standards set forth in Article 10 of the Planning Code; affirming the Planning Department’s determination under the California Environmental Quality Act; and making public necessity, convenience, and welfare findings under Planning Code, Section 302, and findings of consistency with the General Plan, and the eight priority policies of Planning Code, Section 101.1.
How it got here
The legislation to designate the Charles L. Hinkel Home as a landmark originated from a resolution initiated by the Board of Supervisors and was reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission.
On March 3, 2026, the Board adopted Resolution No. 093-26 to initiate the landmark designation of the Charles L. Hinkel Home.
The Mayor approved the initiation resolution on March 6, 2026.
The Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing and recommended the designation of the Charles L. Hinkel Home as a landmark.
The Planning Department transmitted the case for the Charles L. Hinkel Home to the Clerk of the Board, including the Historic Preservation Commission's recommendation.
A public hearing was scheduled for July 20, 2026, to consider the ordinance for the landmark designation.
The ordinance is currently at the first reading stage in the Board of Supervisors.
