How it got here
The legislation to rename Avery Street to Boswell Way originated from a community request to honor Reverend Hamilton T. Boswell.
The Board adopted Resolution No. 542-08, sponsored by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, to initiate the process of renaming Avery Street to Boswell Way in honor of Reverend Boswell.
City staff installed signs reflecting the intended Boswell Way street name on Avery Street, following the Board's 2008 resolution.
Supervisor Mahmood introduced a resolution to officially rename Avery Street to Boswell Way, responding to community requests and the confusion caused by the reversion of the street name.
The proposed legislation was referred to relevant city departments for review and response as required by the Public Works Code.
The Department of Public Works and the Municipal Transportation Agency discovered that the Boswell Way name had not been officially legislated, leading to the reversion of signage back to Avery Street.
The resolution to rename Avery Street to Boswell Way is currently pending committee action after being assigned to the Board.
