How it got here
The legislation to establish an Office of Food Security Coordination in San Francisco originated from a directive by Mayor Lurie to address rising food insecurity and improve coordination among city services.
The City adopted Resolution No. 447-13, pledging to achieve food security and eliminate hunger by 2020, recognizing access to nutritious food as a fundamental human right.
Mayor Lurie directed HSA Executive Director Trent Rhorer to establish the Food Security Council to provide expertise on food security strategy and policy.
Mayor Lurie introduced the ordinance to establish the Office of Food Security Coordination within the Human Services Agency to address food insecurity in San Francisco.
The proposed ordinance was referred to the Human Services Agency for further review and comments.
The Human Services Agency identified the need for a centralized office to coordinate food security efforts across multiple departments due to fragmented services.
